Acceptable Use Policy

This Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") sets out what you may and may not do when using the IPTruth website, lookup tools, API, and related services ("Services"). It applies to everyone who uses the Services, whether on a free or paid plan, and forms part of our Terms of Service. If you breach this AUP, we may suspend or terminate your access, as described in section 8. IPTruth is a trading name of Athlok Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number [COMPANY NUMBER]) whose registered office is at [REGISTERED OFFICE ADDRESS] ("IPTruth", "we", "us", or "our").

IPTruth provides information about IP addresses, networks, and routing. This data describes networks, not people. It is approximate, and it must never be used to put anyone at risk or to make consequential decisions about an individual. The rules below exist to keep the Services safe, lawful, and available to everyone.

1. General

You must use the Services only for lawful purposes, in line with these rules, our Terms of Service, and all applicable laws and regulations (including data protection, privacy, anti-spam, sanctions, and export-control laws). You are responsible for all activity carried out through your account, API keys, or connection.

2. Protecting people (privacy and safety)

IP intelligence can be misused to target individuals. You must not use the Services, alone or combined with other data, to:

  • stalk, harass, intimidate, threaten, or surveil any person;
  • identify, unmask, or attempt to re-identify a specific individual or household from an IP address, or link an IP address to a named person;
  • determine, infer, or track the physical location, movements, or real-world identity of a specific person;
  • "dox" anyone, that is, gather or publish private or identifying information about a person without a lawful basis and their knowledge;
  • facilitate domestic abuse, gender-based violence, or any attempt to locate a person who does not wish to be found; or
  • profile or discriminate against individuals on the basis of inferred location, ethnicity, nationality, or any protected characteristic.

Where you process personal data obtained through or derived from the Services, you must do so in accordance with applicable data protection law (including the UK GDPR and, where relevant, the EU GDPR) and have your own lawful basis for that processing.

3. No high-stakes or consequential decisions about people

The data is probabilistic and is not a consumer report. You must not use it as the sole or primary basis for any decision that produces legal or similarly significant effects on a person, including decisions about credit, lending, insurance, employment, housing or tenancy, education, or eligibility for any benefit, service, or government entitlement. You must not use it as the sole or primary basis for any decision affecting a person's physical safety, nor present its output to a person as a solely automated decision in a way that would breach Article 22 of the UK GDPR. For customers in the United States: IPTruth is not a consumer reporting agency, and the Services are not "consumer reports" under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

4. Platform and data integrity

To keep the Services available and to protect our data and intellectual property, you must not:

  • scrape, crawl, spider, harvest, or bulk-extract content from our website or tools by automated means outside the documented API;
  • exceed, evade, or attempt to circumvent rate limits, quotas, authentication, or other access controls (for example by rotating IP addresses, accounts, or API keys to avoid limits or fees);
  • copy, store, or accumulate Service output in order to build, train, or populate a database, product, or service that competes with or substitutes for IPTruth, or to reconstruct any substantial part of our datasets;
  • resell, redistribute, sublicense, or publicly release the raw data as a standalone dataset or feed, except under a separate written redistribution licence from us;
  • reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to derive our data sources, methodologies, or source code, except to the limited extent the law does not allow this to be prohibited; or
  • remove, obscure, or alter any attribution, notice, or branding we require, including any attribution required on free-tier use.

Automated API clients must send a descriptive, identifying User-Agent (for example, your application or company name and a contact address). Generic, empty, forged, or deliberately misleading client identifiers may be blocked.

5. Security

You must not:

  • access, or try to access, any account, system, network, or data that you are not authorised to access;
  • use our diagnostic or network tools (such as lookups, traceroute, or looking-glass features) to probe, scan, attack, or interfere with systems you do not own or have permission to test;
  • introduce malware, or interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the Services (including denial-of-service activity or placing an unreasonable load on our infrastructure);
  • share, sell, sub-lease, or transfer your account or API credentials, whether for payment or not; or
  • test or probe the vulnerability of the Services without our prior written consent, except through a security disclosure process we operate.

6. Content and conduct

You must not use the Services to send spam or unsolicited messages, to infringe anyone's intellectual property or other rights, to distribute unlawful, defamatory, or abusive content, or to deceive others about who you are or your right to use the Services.

7. Reporting abuse or inaccurate data

To report misuse of the Services or abusive activity, email abuse@iptruth.com. If you believe an IP address is associated with the wrong location, or you want an IP record reviewed, see the correction and delisting process described in our Privacy Policy.

8. Enforcement

We may investigate suspected breaches of this AUP and cooperate with law enforcement where appropriate. Depending on the severity, we may throttle, suspend, or terminate access, remove or disable content, or take other action we consider appropriate, with or without notice. For serious or clearly abusive activity, such as scraping, attacks, or threats to a person's safety, we may act immediately and without prior notice. We are not liable for action taken in good faith to enforce this AUP, and no refund is due for access lost as a result of your breach.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this AUP from time to time to address new forms of misuse or for legal or operational reasons. The "Last updated" date shows when it last changed, and continued use of the Services after a change takes effect means you accept the updated policy.
