How It Works
IPTruth triangulation uses globally distributed vantage points to measure round-trip latency to a target IP. By converting latency into estimated distance from each measurement point, the system calculates a geographic intersection -- similar to how GPS works with satellites, but using internet infrastructure instead.
Latency measurements are combined with BGP path analysis (which reveals the physical network path traffic takes) and infrastructure mapping (identifying nearby routers, IXPs, and colocation facilities). Each signal source is independently weighted based on measurement quality, and the final result includes a confidence score reflecting how well the signals agree.
For well-connected IPs with multiple nearby vantage points, triangulation typically achieves 1-3km accuracy -- a significant improvement over the 25km+ radius common in database-only geolocation. The confidence score lets you decide when to trust the triangulated result versus falling back to standard geolocation.
